Description
David of Sassoun is one of the most popular Armenian mythical hero characters. His statue by Yervand Kochar is located on a small square in Yerevan capitol of Armenia. I transfer the digital photo and create this epic like artwork that shows the power and heroism of David posing on top of a mountain looking toward a passage in the valley. The grey clouds which cast a storm front scenery, gives a powerful background to the statue with the Armenian flag posted next to him. The palette is finished with poster like effect.
There is another statue of David of Sassoun in Fresno, CA on Tulara street. created by Varaz Samuelian. The difference between the two statues is so huge. Each one has a different aspect and proportions.
Now here's some info about Davis of Sassoun himself. Father Karekin Sevantsdyan, a bishop, poem writer was the first to collect the legends surrounding this hero in his first collection of Armenian Epic stories in 1874. Until that time it was preserved only in oral tradition. The epic of "David of Sasson" consist of four parts telling the story of heroes of Sassoun. David fought against "Msra Melik" King of Egypt. His heroism is larger than life, full of exaggeration showcasing supernatural power to fight the enemies.
Till now, David of Sassoun considers one of the most popular mythical heroes of Armenian literature. Hovhannes Tumanian (1869-1923) famous writer wrote a book on David of Sassoun in 1902 which was later on translated to English by Aram Tolegian.
